Our last hike in this region of West Viriginia took place in the Greenbrier Forest State Park. The forest is part of the Allegheny Mountain Range; the Greenbrier Forest State Park is a 5,133-acre forest bisected by Kate’s Mountain. Kate’s Mountain was named after Kate Carpenter, who, in 1756, survived an Indian raid by seeking refuge high on the mountain, hiding with her infant daughter in a hallow log.

Greenbrier Forest State Park has miles of hiking trails, campgrounds, swimming pool, archery & gun range…activities for everyone. We spent time in the ranger station & gift shop, where the attendant gave us great recommendations on what to do within the park. She made sure to point out that the bear icons on the map should not worry us, they haven’t seen a bear in these parts for quite some time…they don’t even bear proof their garbage cans.

We decided to do the YCC trail, which is a short easy hike of just 0.6 miles but worth the views. I have never seen so many mushrooms during a hike!

Half way through the hike there is a clearing where some obstacles for beginning mountain bikers. We tried the pups out on them.

Hubs had his own obstacle course….

Just before we came to the end of the trail, I had a funny feeling we were being watched…

After the hike there is a gravel mountain road that takes you up and over Kate’s Mountain before reconnecting to US-60 in White Sulphur Springs. I would definitely return to the Greenbrier Forest State Park to do some camping and explore some of the other trails.
