Greenbrier River Trail

Today we explored the Greenbrier River Trail. The 162-mile Greenbrier River is the longest uninterrupted river in the United States, and it is a tributary of the New River which I mentioned in yesterday’s post regarding the New River Gorge National Park.

The Greenbrier River Trail is a 78-mile rail-trail that stretched from Cass Scenic State Park in the Pocahantas County in the north to Caldwell in Greenbrier County in the south. The trail accommodates hiking, biking, and horseback riding. https://www.greenbrierrivertrail.com/

We began at the southern end of the trail in Caldwell as it is just a stone’s throw away from Lewisburg. The trail was flat, wide and consisted of a hard packed fine gravel. The trail was mostly shaded from deciduous trees, with one side of the trail dropping down to follow the Greenbrier River.

We walked this trail with the pups, who were wearing their B.A.R.K. Ranger bandana’s!

At one point along the trail there was a small clearing that allowed for drainage down to the river. Hubby decided to scramble his way down to the river’s edge. As he looked upriver, he saw an outcropping of large rocks where people were sunbathing and swimming.

We continued down the trail until we came to a set of steps that led down to the water’s edge, it was beautiful!

After spending some time by the water, we headed back to the trailhead. The pups were thoroughly worn out, taking a nice long nap after returning home. Tired dogs are good dogs.
