Pacific Northwest Road Trip: Day 11

Today we went back to hike some of the trails we saw during our rainy-day Newton B. Drury Scenic drive. We stopped again at the Prairie Creek Visitor Center and asked the Ranger where to catch the trailhead to Trillium Falls. The ranger also gave a few other hiking options to consider for the day.

We started out toward Trillium Falls trail head. The Ranger said to be watchful for Elk because she had seen a female with her young earlier that morning. We reached the trail head but unfortunately did not see any Elk.

To see the falls themselves is only a short distance from the trail head; you can either turn around and return to the trail head and parking lot or continue further on and complete the full 2.7-mile loop. We chose to continue on and complete the full loop.

Trillium Falls

The Falls themselves are small compared to some we’ve seen in other parts of the country, but they were worth the visit and the only falls we have seen on this trip. There is a bridge that crossed over the rocky bed creek bed from which the falls empties into, which is where this photo was taken.

Continuing on, the trail climbed upward and became very dense with ferns. I am also surprised at how little we were bothered by insects on this trip. Perhaps it was the time of year or that we sprayed ourselves with DEET but we never were bitten, nor did we see many insects.

Capturing the majesty of the park in photos is difficult. It begins to overwhelm the senses as there is always another amazing site just around the corner.

It is a challenge to convey the scope of how huge these trees are!

The next trail, the Karl Knapp Trail, began at the Prairie Creek Visitor Center- which was convenient since that is where we parked the car.

Getting weary, we decided to call it a day. On our drive back to Crescent City we stopped at the Klamath Overlook to see where the fresh water from the Klamath River met with the Pacific Ocean.
