Pacific Northwest Road Trip: Day 6

This morning we left Poppy to have her own vacation adventure with my sister and brother-in-law in Washington while we got back in the car for an eight hour drive to Crescent City, California.

Maybe it was my fatigue setting in but I really did not enjoy the drive through Oregon. Compared to what we have seen so far, this state underwhelmed me. Maybe it was because we stayed on the I-5 for almost the entire route and it was very busy with traffic. I actually dozed on and off for most of this drive, which is why I do not have any photographs to document this drive.

I did notice that there were some very interesting names for creeks, lakes and rivers. For example, we crossed a small creek called, Jump Off Joe Creek. Curiosity got the best of me and I decided to look it up. Turns out that it was named after 29-year-old Joseph McLoughlin, who in 1839 was returning to camp from a trapping expedition in the dark and fell from a rocky bluff into the creek. He survived the fall but suffered from severe injuries for the rest of his life. Locals began calling the spot where he fell Jump Off Joe.

Once we turned off the I-5 and began traveling on US-199 into California the landscape dramatically changed to curvy mountain passes with steep drop-offs on one side and towering trees and mountains on the other. Truly breathtaking views.

We’re staying at the Anchor Beach Inn in Crescent City, California. We have a view of the Pacific Ocean from our room, crossing the street we can walk to the beach. This evening we saw surfers, dog walkers, people sitting on driftwood taking the views and even some flying kites!

This is our view from our hotel room window!
A little windy on the beach, our hotel is in the background.
Poppy would have loved this!

We had dinner at a local food truck called Doughlicious Costa Pizza and it was fantastic! We had the Tuscan White Hen Pizza that was made with olive oil, roasted garlic, chicken, ricotta, artichoke hearts, thyme and shaved parmesan….WOW! The crust was fantastic too and I would recommend getting the marinara sauce for dipping, it complements the creaminess of the pizza perfectly! I would definitely recommend giving them a try if you’re in the area. Check them out here.. https://doughliciouscosta.com/#

As the sun was beginning to set we saw this reminder of God’s goodness! Perfect way to end this day! Time for a good night’s sleep and get ready for whatever adventure awaits us tomorrow!
