Tomorrow, exactly one month after our great Pacific Northwest Road Trip, we are getting back on the road for another adventure…albeit a much shorter excursion! This trip finds us heading to that area of the country that is supposedly almost heaven, West Virginia!
We have driven through West Virginia many times, but except for a short stay in my High School days, we have never spent any quality time exploring the area. This particular excursion hopes to accomplish a few things.
First, it’s an opportunity to spend time with my high school best friend and her husband. They live only three hours away in the neighboring state of Virginia; we’re splitting the cost of a VRBO rental in the town of White Sulphur Springs.
Secondly, we want to explore the area and the neighboring city of Lewisburg to consider if we could see ourselves potentially living there. The lure to this part of the country is the abundant opportunities to enjoy outdoor pursuits like, hiking, biking, & boating; but an even stronger pull is that we would only be three hours from my BFF and two hours away from one of my sisters!
There are many other things to consider besides those two points. We have been watching many YouTube videos about the state…a lot of it not being the most positive. We saw one statistic that says since the 1970’s, West Viriginia is the only state that has consistently lost population. There is no escaping that there are many areas that seem to be stuck in a cycle of perpetual poverty. However, there are also areas that are seeing new growth and energy as they focus on reinventing, revitalizing and dispelling stereotypes of West Virginia small towns.
Rather than rely on other people’s opinions, positive or negative, we decided it best to go see and explore the area for ourselves. So, come along and see what this area of West Virginia has to offer!
