Houghton Lake…

There are over 11.000 inland lakes in the State of Michigan; in fact, at no point in the state are you more than six miles from an inland lake. The largest inland lake, at over 20,000 acres, is Houghton Lake located in the upper third of the state’s lower peninsula.

We spent five days in this area vacationing with family and friends. Though it may not appear to be that large on the map, in person the lake is quite impressive. It contains over 30 miles of shoreline, the deepest part of the lake measures twenty-two feet with an average depth of around seven-and-a-half feet. An all-sports lake, it is popular with boaters of all types, kayakers and paddle boarders. Anglers have the opportunity to catch walleye, northern pike, large & small mouth bass, bluegill, yellow perch, rock bass and crappie…and on rare occasions muskies.

My hubby’s brother and his family rented a house right on the lake, which became the central gathering place for visiting and relaxing. High School friends were also staying on Houghton Lake during this time, so that was a bonus! We were travelling with Poppy, so we opted for a pet-friendly hotel about a ten-minute drive away.

There is something about being near water that decompresses the soul. Perhaps it’s the sunlight sparkling on the water’s surface, the sound of the waves lapping on the shore, the cool breeze carried over the water surface, the gorgeous sunsets and sunrises, the crackling of a campfire and laughter of shared memories…perhaps it’s all the above combined into a single perfect day. Whatever the reason, I am blessed for the opportunity to share in the experience with people who matter.
